The Centennial National Math Honor Society is partnering this year with the Glenelg National Math Honor Society to host the new DECAGON Tournament, a continuation of the annual CHS Mu Alpha Theta Tournament! All levels of math competition experience are welcome.
The tournament is a great way for competitors to test their math skills in a fun, low-stress competition.
Students of all grades may register for free. If you plan to form a team with people you already know, please list the members of your team. If you register as an individual, we will place you on a team for the team round, so don’t worry!
We will be hosting at two locations:
Lunch is free at both locations! We will be serving cheese and pepperoni pizza.
All answers should be in simplest form. The only permitted materials are pencils and paper. Computational aids, including but not limited to calculators, rulers, protractors, and graph paper are strictly prohibited.
Check out some of our rounds from previous years to get used to the format and difficulty on our Archive Page!
Competitors will pick 2 of the following categories to compete in:
Each test will be 10 questions long. Competitors will have 45 minutes to complete each test.
Teams of up to 4 will take the team test. Competitors may form prearranged teams. Those without teammates will be put in a team. The test will be 10 questions and 45 minutes long. The team score will be calculated by adding twice the team round score to four times the average score on all tests of all members (as some teams have fewer than 4 people).
The top 4 competitors from each individual category will participate in a countdown round for that category. Competitors will compete head-to-head in this round. A problem will be displayed through a presentation, and the contestants will race to solve the problem (with pencil and paper).
The guts round is a 45-minute team round with the same teams as the team round. Teams will work on 5 sets of increasingly difficult problems with 4 problems per set. At the starting signal, each team sends a runner to an assigned problem station to pick up copies of the first set of problems for each team member. As soon as a team has answers for one problem set, the runner may bring the answers to the problem station and pick up the next set. The guts round will have a scoreboard of the teams updated in real time.
